ONCOLOGY NURSES SENSITIZE EXPECTANT MOTHERS ON CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING AND PREVENTION

As part of activities marking the 2025 cervical cancer awareness month, Oncology Nurses from the Federal medical center, Umuahia have taken the lead in educating pregnant women about cervical cancer prevention and early detection. 

Oncology nurses Onuorah Geraldine and Akoma Chika who spearheaded the sensitization campaign at the hospital’s Antenatal clinic, emphasized the importance of routine screening and vaccination, and stressed that early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes.

Speaking, Nurse Onuorah Geraldine said cervical cancer remains a major health challenge, but it is preventable through Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and routine screenings, adding that the World Health Organization (WHO) has set an ambitious goal to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030, with key targets including 90% HPV vaccination coverage, 70% screening coverage, and 90% access to treatment for diagnosed cases.

Contributing, Nurse  Akoma Chika while reeling the preventive measures to include safe sex and personal hygiene,  added that the hospital offers screening services and encouraged women to take advantage of the opportunity, and also urged them to spread awareness within their families and communities.

The expectant mothers expressed gratitude for the valuable information and pledged to prioritize their health by undergoing screening after delivery, and disseminate the information. 

Also in attendance were Antenatal clinic nurse and student nurses in the federal medical centre, Umuahia.
