In the early hours of January 1, 2026 the first baby of the year arrived at exactly 12.43am ushering in the new year with joy and celebration in Abia State.
The baby, little Miss Oluebubechi Nwatuobi Excessgrace, weighed 3kg at birth and was delivered in the government-owned health facility at the Akirika Ukwu Primary health centre, Ukwa West local government area of Abia State.
The Wife of the Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti who visited the newborn baby at the Primary health centre, described the birth as a joyful and hopeful beginning to 2026, and noted that the successful delivery reflects the improving state of Abia's Primary healthcare system.
Mrs. Otti encouraged pregnant women and nursing mothers across the State to trust and utilize government health facilities for safe deliveries, and further charged the parents of the newborn to raise her with strong moral values that would positively shape her future and contribution to society.
She presented the newborn and her parents with essential post-natal gifts, and a cash donation of 1 million Naira(#1,000,000). She explained that the financial support was to help the nursing mother maintain proper nutrition and overall wellbeing.
Speaking, the Commissioner for health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche commended the first lady for her unwavering support for the health sector, noting that her efforts complement the healthcare reforms of Governor Alex Otti aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery across Abia State.
The Matron of the healthcare centre, Miss Kasarachi Emmanuel expressed profound gratitude for the visit and donation, describing them as timely, and morale-boosting for both staff and patients.
Overwhelmed with joy, the parents of the newborn, Mr. Nwatuobi Chiagozie and Mrs. Blessing Chiagozie, natives of Itungwa in Obingwa local government area of Abia State, thanked the first lady for her kindness, saying the gesture turned the birth of their daughter into a lifetime memory of joy and gratitude.
